إنَّ جِدَّ الدُّنيا هَزْلٌ، وعِزَّها ذُلُّ، وَعِلْوَها سِفْلٌ۔
Verily the seriousness of this world is jest, its honour is disgrace and its height is lowliness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily the seriousness of this world is jest, its honour is disgrace and its height is lowliness.
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature of worldly affairs and the deceptive allure they hold.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (jest) "جِدَّ" refers to the seriousness or gravity of something. It implies that the world, despite its apparent importance and significance, is ultimately trivial and fleeting. The word (disgrace) "عِزَّها" signifies the dishonor and humiliation that one may experience in their pursuit of worldly achievements. And the word (lowliness) "عِلْوَها" refers to the ultimate insignificance and worthlessness of worldly positions and status.
To further comprehend the meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly pursuits and the fleeting pleasure they provide. It serves as a reminder that the true purpose of life lies beyond the material realm. Similarly, in Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse highlights the transient nature of life and the ultimate reality that awaits us in the Hereafter. It emphasizes that the true value and honor lie in attaining salvation and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), rather than in the fleeting pursuits of this world.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the eternal over the temporary, the spiritual over the material. It urges us to detach ourselves from the illusions of worldly success and instead focus on the pursuit of righteousness and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
By recognizing the transitory nature of worldly affairs, we can free ourselves from the shackles of materialism and strive for a higher purpose. This understanding should motivate us to seek knowledge, perform good deeds, and engage in acts of worship that will bring us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It should also remind us to be humble in our achievements and to prioritize the well-being of others over our own desires.
Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reflection on the life of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself. Known for his immense knowledge, wisdom, and piety, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) demonstrated through his actions the insignificance of worldly positions and the importance of seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Despite being the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), he lived a life of simplicity and humility, prioritizing the well-being of the Muslim community over personal gain.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the eternal over the temporary, the spiritual over the material. It urges us to detach ourselves from the illusions of worldly success and instead focus on the pursuit of righteousness and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By understanding the transient nature of worldly affairs, we can strive for a higher purpose and lead a life that is pleasing to our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the right path and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
