Hadith #2434

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ صَنَعَ مَعْرُوفاً نالَ أجْراً وشُكْراً

which translates to

One who performs a benevolent action gains reward and gratitude.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of performing acts of kindness and goodness towards others. To fully understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.

The word (ma'rufan) "مَعْرُوفاً" refers to any act of goodness, kindness, or virtue that is recognized and appreciated by society. This reward is not limited to material or worldly gains, but rather encompasses the infinite mercy and blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The word (shukran) "شُكْراً" refers to the gratitude and appreciation that is expressed by those who benefit from the benevolent action. It signifies the recognition and acknowledgment of the kindness shown by the doer of good. This gratitude can come in various forms, such as words of thanks, prayers, or even acts of kindness in return.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195:

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of spending in the way of Allah and performing acts of goodness. It encourages Muslims to engage in acts of charity and benevolence, highlighting that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves those who do good. Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80:

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all our actions. When we perform acts of goodness, we should do so with a firm belief in Allah's assistance and seek His blessings and sustenance.
