بِشرُكَ يَدُلُّ على كَرَمِ نَفْسِكَ، وتَواضُعُكَ يُنْبِئُ عَنْ شريفِ خُلْقِكَ۔
Your cheerfulness shows the nobility of your soul and your humility points to your righteous character.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully highlights two important qualities that a Muslim should possess: cheerfulness and humility. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that one's cheerfulness is an indication of the nobility of their soul, while their humility reflects their righteous character.
Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (bushruk) "بِشرُكَ" refers to cheerfulness, happiness, or a positive demeanor. It is derived from the root word (bashara) "بَشَرَ", which means to bring good news or glad tidings. The word (yadullu) "يَدُلُّ" means to indicate or show. (karami nafsika) "كَرَمِ نَفْسِكَ" translates to the nobility or honor of one's soul. And (tawadu'uka) "تَواضُعُكَ" means humility or humbleness, which is derived from the root word (wada'a) "وَاضَعَ", meaning to lower oneself.
To understand the significance of cheerfulness and humility in Islam, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13):
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that true nobility lies in righteousness, not in wealth, lineage, or worldly status. It is the righteousness of a person that elevates their status in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). And one of the manifestations of righteousness is humility. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:34):
And for every nation We have appointed rites which they perform. So, let them not dispute with you over the matter but invite them to your Lord. Indeed, you are upon straight guidance.
This verse reminds us that as Muslims, we should not engage in unnecessary disputes or arguments. Instead, we should invite others to the path of Allah with wisdom and humility. By doing so, we demonstrate our righteous character and our commitment to following the guidance of Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that cheerfulness is a reflection of the nobility of our souls. When we are cheerful, we spread positivity and bring joy to those around us. This quality is highly regarded in Islam, as the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said,
The most beloved of people to Allah is the one who brings most benefit to people, and the most beloved of deeds to Allah is making a Muslim happy.
Furthermore, humility is a key characteristic of a righteous person. It is the opposite of arrogance and pride, which are condemned in Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11):
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse reminds us to treat others with respect and dignity, regardless of their social status or background. By practicing humility, we create an atmosphere of unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of cheerfulness and humility in Islam. Our cheerfulness reflects the nobility of our souls, while our humility indicates our righteous character. These qualities are supported by numerous Quranic verses that emphasize the significance of righteousness and humility in the sight of Allah. As Muslims, we should strive to embody these qualities in our daily lives, spreading positivity and treating others with respect and humility. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to cultivate these qualities and earn His pleasure.
