Mutual affection between fathers creates a relationship between the sons. Relationship is more in need of affection than affection is of relationship.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #308)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of mutual affection between fathers, which in turn creates a strong bond between their children. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that this bond of relationship is even more in need of affection than the affection itself is in need of a relationship.
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (mawaddah) "مَوَدَّةُ" refers to mutual affection, love, and kindness. It is a deep and sincere love that exists between individuals. The word (al-abaa) "الاْبَاءِ" refers to fathers, and (al-abnaa) "الاْبْنَاءِ" refers to sons. The word (qarabah) "قَرَابَةٌ" refers to a relationship or kinship, and (al-qarabah) "الْقَرَابَةِ" refers to the concept of relationship itself.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong family ties and the significance of love and affection within the family. Allah says in Surah An-Nisa, verse 36:
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.
This verse highlights the importance of treating parents and relatives with kindness and goodness. It emphasizes the need to maintain strong family ties and to extend love and affection to our kin. This is in line with the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who emphasizes the significance of mutual affection between fathers and its impact on the relationship between their children.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Rum, verse 21, Allah says:
And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.
This verse highlights the divine wisdom behind the creation of spouses and the establishment of affection and mercy between them. It emphasizes the importance of love and affection in creating a harmonious and tranquil environment within the family. Similarly, the affection between fathers mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) plays a crucial role in shaping the relationship between their children.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the bond of relationship is more in need of affection than affection is in need of a relationship. This enlightening saying highlights the significance of love and affection in nurturing and strengthening family ties. While a relationship based solely on blood ties may exist, it is the presence of affection and love that truly deepens and strengthens that relationship.
When fathers show affection towards their children, it creates a sense of security, trust, and emotional connection. This affectionate bond becomes the foundation for a strong relationship between fathers and their children. It is through this bond that children learn about love, compassion, and empathy. They internalize these qualities and carry them forward in their own relationships, thereby perpetuating the cycle of love and affection within the family.
Conversely, when there is a lack of affection between fathers and their children, the relationship becomes strained and distant. This can lead to feelings of resentment, emotional detachment, and a weakened sense of kinship. The absence of affection can hinder the development of a strong bond and can have long-lasting consequences on the overall well-being of individuals and the family unit as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of mutual affection between fathers and its profound impact on the relationship between their children. It reminds us of the significance of love and affection in nurturing strong family ties and creating a harmonious and loving environment within the family. As Muslims, we are encouraged to prioritize and cultivate affectionate relationships within our families, following the example set by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of the Quran. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to foster love and affection within our families and strengthen the bonds of kinship.
