— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #165)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاَ طَاعَةَ لِمخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْخَالِقِ
which translates to
There should be no obeying anyone against Allah's commands.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of prioritizing obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over blind obedience to any human being.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (obeying) "طَاعَةَ" refers to following someone's orders or commands. (anyone) "مَخْلُوقٍ" refers to any created being, including humans. (against) "مَعْصِيَةِ" signifies going against or disobeying. Finally, (Allah's commands) "الْخَالِقِ" refers to the divine commands and laws set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The exegesis of this Hadith can be supported by several Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of obeying Allah's commands above all else. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 4:59)
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result
This verse highlights the hierarchy of obedience, starting with Allah and His Messenger, and then those in authority. It emphasizes that if there is a conflict between the commands of Allah and the commands of any human being, the ultimate authority lies with Allah. Muslims are encouraged to refer back to Allah and His Messenger for guidance and resolution.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Imran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 4:69)
And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions
This verse highlights the rewards and blessings that come with obeying Allah and His Messenger. It emphasizes that true success lies in aligning one's actions and obedience with the divine commands. By prioritizing obedience to Allah, one becomes deserving of the company of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs, and the righteous.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that blind obedience to any human being, regardless of their status or authority, should never lead us to disobey Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our obedience should always be in accordance with the divine commands and teachings of Islam. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to critically evaluate any command or order that goes against the principles and teachings of Islam.
