Hadith #3566

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the concept of reliance on this worldly life, despite the apparent fluctuations and uncertainties it presents. Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children. It is like a rain whose vegetation pleases the tillers; then it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. And in the Hereafter, there is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and His pleasure. And the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment.

This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the deception they bring. The reliance on this world, despite its apparent attractions, is indeed ignorance. The material possessions, wealth, and power that we may acquire in this life are temporary and will ultimately fade away. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to prioritize their actions and intentions towards the eternal life in the Hereafter.

Another Quranic verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Kahf, where Allah says, (18:45)

And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.

This verse beautifully illustrates the temporary nature of worldly life. Just as rain brings forth vegetation that eventually withers away, the pleasures and possessions of this world will also fade. Therefore, relying solely on this world and neglecting the Hereafter is a manifestation of ignorance.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true knowledge lies in recognizing the transience of this worldly life and focusing on the eternal life to come. By understanding the true nature of this world, we can avoid becoming attached to its temporary attractions and instead invest our efforts in actions that will benefit us in the Hereafter.

The consequences of relying on this world are manifold. It can lead to a neglect of our spiritual development, as we become engrossed in accumulating wealth, status, and material possessions. It can also blind us to the true purpose of our existence, which is to worship Allah and seek His pleasure. Moreover, relying on this world can lead to arrogance, greed, and a disregard for the rights of others.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to strike a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual obligations. While it is necessary to fulfill our worldly duties, we must remember that they are means to an end and not the ultimate goal. Our focus should always be on the Hereafter, seeking the pleasure of Allah and preparing for the eternal life that awaits us.
