Hadith #174

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

لِلظَّالِمِ الْبَادِي غَداً بِكَفِّهِ عَضَّةٌ۔

This Hadith can be translated into English as:

He who takes the lead in oppression has to bite his hand (in repentance) tomorrow.

Let us delve into the meanings of some important words in this Hadith. The word (dhālim) "ظَّالِمِ" refers to the oppressor, the one who transgresses the boundaries of justice and fairness. The word (al-bādī) "الْبَادِي" means the one who initiates or takes the lead in something. And the word (kaffihi) "كَفِّهِ" refers to his own hand.

To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 120:

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, 'Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.' If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.

This verse reminds us of the importance of following the guidance of Allah and His chosen representatives, rather than succumbing to the desires and opinions of others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the gate to the city of knowledge, possessed immense wisdom and understanding.
