(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Tongue)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاتُمْلَكُ عَثَراتُ اللِّسانِ۔" which translates to
The slips of the tongue cannot be controlled.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the difficulty in controlling our speech and the potential harm that can arise from it.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (atharat) "عَثَراتُ" refers to slips or mistakes, while (al-lisan) "اللِّسانِ" denotes the tongue. The tongue is a powerful tool that can either bring about good or cause harm. It is through our words that we express our thoughts, convey our emotions, and interact with others. However, if not used wisely, the tongue can lead to unintended slips and mistakes that may have negative consequences.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of uncontrolled speech in Surah Al-Qalam, verse 10:
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer.
This verse cautions against blindly following those who engage in excessive swearing and vulgar language. It reminds us to be mindful of our own speech and to refrain from indulging in such behavior.
In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us to be cautious with our words:
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from negative assumptions, spying, and backbiting, as they can lead to harm and discord among Muslims. It reminds us to be mindful of the impact our words can have on others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and mindful of their speech. It highlights the inherent difficulty in controlling the slips of the tongue, as even the most well-intentioned individuals may unintentionally say something hurtful or inappropriate. This Hadith encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our words and to strive for better control over our speech.
By acknowledging the potential harm that can arise from slips of the tongue, we can take proactive steps to avoid such mistakes. This includes being mindful of our words, speaking with kindness and empathy, and refraining from engaging in gossip, backbiting, or spreading rumors. It also reminds us to seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and from those whom we may have unintentionally harmed with our words.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious and mindful of their speech. It highlights the difficulty in controlling the slips of the tongue and emphasizes the need for self-reflection and improvement in our communication. By aligning our speech with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive to use our words in a manner that brings about unity, understanding, and compassion among Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to control our tongues and speak with righteousness.
