لاتُكْثِرْ فَتُضْجِرَ، ولاتَفْرُطْ فَتَسْقُطَ۔
Do not talk so much that you annoy others and do not speak so less that you fall [in the eyes of others].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to strike a balance in our speech. He says,
Do not talk so much that you annoy others and do not speak so less that you fall [in the eyes of others].
This profound advice highlights the importance of moderation and balance in our interactions with others.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words used by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The word (talk so much) "تُكْثِرْ" refers to excessive speech or verbosity. It implies speaking without restraint or consideration for others. On the other hand, the word (speak so less) "تَفْرُطْ" signifies speaking too little or being silent to the extent that it may lead to a negative perception of oneself.
To further elucidate the wisdom behind this advice, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking that which is best, indicating the need for thoughtful and beneficial speech.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding excessive speech that may lead to ridicule, insult, or offensive behavior towards others.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their words and their impact on others. Excessive talking can lead to annoyance and irritation, causing strain in relationships and damaging the harmony within a community. On the other hand, speaking too little or remaining silent can create a negative perception, as it may be interpreted as disinterest or lack of contribution.
By striking a balance in our speech, we can maintain healthy and respectful interactions with others. This balance requires us to be mindful of the content, tone, and timing of our words. It encourages us to speak when necessary, to express ourselves clearly and concisely, and to listen attentively to others.
Furthermore, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice can also be applied to our spiritual journey. Excessive talking can distract us from focusing on our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and may lead to heedlessness. Similarly, speaking too little or neglecting the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) can result in spiritual stagnation and a lack of growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to strike a balance in their speech. It encourages us to be mindful of the impact our words have on others and to strive for moderation in our interactions. By following this advice, we can foster harmonious relationships, maintain our dignity, and progress on our spiritual journey. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to speak with wisdom and moderation.
