اَلْحِكْمَةُ عِصْمَةٌ۔
Wisdom is protection.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wisdom)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الحكمة عِصْمَةٌ" which translates to "Wisdom is protection." This concise statement carries connotation and holds great significance in the lives of Muslims.
Let us begin by examining the key words in this Hadith. "Al-Hikmah" refers to wisdom, which encompasses knowledge, understanding, and the ability to make sound judgments. It is the ability to apply knowledge in a way that benefits oneself and others. "Ismah" means protection or immunity, indicating that wisdom serves as a safeguard against harm and wrongdoing.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of wisdom and knowledge in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah says,
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases, and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great good.
This verse highlights that wisdom is a divine gift and a great blessing from Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah mentions the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and how He bestowed wisdom upon him. This wisdom enabled Musa to navigate through challenging situations and make wise decisions. Similarly, in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:78), Allah praises Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) for his wisdom and understanding.
The connection between wisdom and protection can be found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:129), where Allah describes Prophet Ibrahim as having been granted wisdom and knowledge. This wisdom not only protected Ibrahim from the darkness of ignorance but also guided him towards the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali's statement, "Wisdom is protection," emphasizes the transformative power of wisdom in shielding individuals from the harmful consequences of ignorance and misguided actions. When one possesses wisdom, they are less likely to fall into error or be swayed by falsehood. Wisdom acts as a shield, guarding against the pitfalls of ignorance, arrogance, and impulsive decision-making.
Moreover, wisdom enables individuals to navigate through the complexities of life and make informed choices. It empowers them to seek knowledge, reflect upon it, and apply it in a way that benefits themselves and others. By seeking wisdom, Muslims can protect themselves from the negative influences of society, the temptations of the ego, and the traps of Shaytan.
The consequences of embracing wisdom are far-reaching. It leads to personal growth, spiritual development, and the attainment of higher levels of consciousness. Wisdom allows individuals to recognize the truth, distinguish between right and wrong, and make decisions that align with the teachings of Islam. It fosters empathy, compassion, and justice, enabling Muslims to contribute positively to their communities and society at large.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's statement, we realize that wisdom is not limited to intellectual knowledge alone. It encompasses moral values, ethical conduct, and a deep understanding of the teachings of Islam. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was known for his immense wisdom and knowledge, which he acquired through his close association with the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his own innate qualities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "Wisdom is protection" serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in all aspects of their lives. By doing so, they can safeguard themselves from the perils of ignorance and make choices that align with the teachings of Islam. May Allah grant us the wisdom to navigate through life's challenges and protect us from harm.
