(Ghurar al-Hikam: Judiciousness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Act with judiciousness and cling to knowledge, your results will be praiseworthy.

This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of two key principles: acting with judiciousness and seeking knowledge. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

The word "hazm" in Arabic refers to acting with judiciousness, prudence, and wisdom. It implies making decisions and taking actions after careful consideration and thoughtful analysis. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages us to use our intellect and exercise wisdom in various aspects of life. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:11-12)

And when it is said to them, 'Do not cause corruption on the earth,' they say, 'We are but reformers.' Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive it not.

This verse highlights the importance of acting with judiciousness and avoiding actions that lead to corruption and harm.

The second part of the Hadith advises us to "cling to knowledge." Knowledge is a fundamental aspect of Islam, and seeking it is highly encouraged in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 39:9)

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse emphasizes the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. Seeking knowledge not only broadens our understanding but also enables us to make informed decisions and act wisely.

The Hadith further states that by acting with judiciousness and clinging to knowledge, our results will be praiseworthy. This means that when we make decisions based on wisdom and seek knowledge to guide our actions, we are more likely to achieve positive outcomes. Our actions will be commendable and beneficial not only for ourselves but also for society as a whole.

To illustrate the significance of this Hadith, let us consider an example. Imagine a Muslim who is faced with a financial decision. Instead of hastily making a choice, they take the time to research, seek advice from experts, and consider the potential consequences. They also consult the teachings of Islam and the Quran to ensure that their decision aligns with the principles of justice and fairness. By acting with judiciousness and clinging to knowledge, they are more likely to make a sound financial decision that benefits them and avoids any potential harm.

The consequences of acting without judiciousness and neglecting knowledge can be detrimental. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against following one's desires without proper guidance. He says, (Quran 28:50)

And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?

This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from Allah to avoid being led astray by our own whims and desires.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize the immense value of acting with judiciousness and seeking knowledge in our lives as Muslims. By doing so, we can make informed decisions, avoid harmful actions, and achieve praiseworthy results. Let us strive to embody these principles in our daily lives and continuously seek knowledge to enhance our understanding of Islam and its teachings.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to act with judiciousness and the motivation to seek knowledge. May He bless us with praiseworthy results in this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.
