لاأمانَةَ لِمَنْ لا دينَ لَهُ۔
There is no trustworthiness in one who has no religion.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Trustworthiness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاأمانَةَ لِمَنْ لا دينَ لَهُ۔
This powerful statement emphasizes the importance of religion in determining a person's trustworthiness. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (trustworthiness) "أمانة" refers to the quality of being reliable, honest, and faithful in fulfilling one's obligations and responsibilities. It encompasses both material and moral aspects of trust. Trustworthiness is a fundamental virtue in Islam, as it forms the basis of social interactions and the establishment of a just society.
The phrase (has no religion) "لا دينَ لَهُ" implies that a person who lacks a religious foundation, or does not adhere to any moral code, cannot be trusted. This Hadith highlights the inseparable connection between religion and trustworthiness. It suggests that one's religious beliefs and values play a crucial role in shaping their character and determining their level of trustworthiness.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:27), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our trusts and not betraying them, as it is a form of betrayal towards Allah and His Messenger.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse highlights the significance of fulfilling our contractual obligations, which is an essential aspect of trustworthiness. It reminds us that our religious commitment should reflect in our dealings with others.
The consequences of disregarding trustworthiness are severe, both in this world and the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Isra (17:34), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling our commitments, especially when it comes to the rights of the vulnerable, such as orphans. It serves as a reminder that we will be held accountable for our actions and the trust we have been given.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement carries profound wisdom and practical implications. A person who lacks a religious foundation may not possess the moral compass necessary to uphold trustworthiness. Without a belief in a higher power and a sense of accountability, they may prioritize their own interests over the trust placed in them.
On the other hand, a person who adheres to a religion, particularly Islam, recognizes that trustworthiness is a fundamental aspect of their faith. Islam teaches us to be honest, just, and reliable in all our dealings, whether they are personal, financial, or professional. It encourages us to fulfill our commitments, honor our promises, and safeguard the rights of others.
A person who possesses a strong religious foundation is motivated by their faith to be trustworthy. They understand that their actions are not only accountable to society but also to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Their fear of displeasing Allah and their desire to attain His pleasure serve as powerful motivations to uphold trustworthiness in all aspects of their lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
There is no trustworthiness in one who has no religion
emphasizes the inseparable connection between religion and trustworthiness. It reminds us that our religious beliefs and values play a crucial role in shaping our character and determining our level of trustworthiness. The Quranic verses mentioned further reinforce this message, highlighting the importance of fulfilling our trusts and commitments. As Muslims, we should strive to embody trustworthiness in all our interactions, knowing that it is a reflection of our faith and a means to attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
