كُنْتُ إذا سَألْتُ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صلَّى اللّه عليه وآله وسلَّم أعْطاني، وإذا أمْسَكْتُ ابْتَدَأني۔
Whenever I asked the Messenger of Allah (s), he would give to me and when I held back, he would be the one to initiate [the matter] with me.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that whenever he asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for something, his request was always granted. Conversely, when he refrained from asking, the Prophet (ﷺ) himself would initiate and offer him what he needed.
This Hadith showcases the exceptional status of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the eyes of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). It demonstrates the deep bond of love, trust, and respect between them. To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of asking Him for our needs in several verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.
This verse highlights the willingness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to answer the prayers of His servants.
Similarly, in Surah Ghafir (40:60), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'
These verses emphasize the importance of seeking Allah's help and guidance through supplication. It is a means through which we establish a direct connection with our Creator and seek His blessings.
In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) had a deep understanding of the importance of supplication and seeking Allah's assistance. He would approach the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) with his needs, knowing that the Prophet (ﷺ) would intercede on his behalf and his requests would be granted.
Furthermore, this Hadith also highlights the selflessness and generosity of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Despite his own responsibilities and concerns, he would actively initiate assistance for Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) without waiting for him to ask. This exemplifies the Prophet's (ﷺ) love and care for his companions, particularly Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his willingness to go above and beyond to fulfill their needs.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to seek Allah's help through supplication and to approach Him with our needs and desires. Just as the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) initiated assistance for Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we should strive to anticipate the needs of our loved ones and offer our support without being asked.
