كما تَرْحَمُ تُرْحَمُ۔
Just as you show mercy, mercy will be shown to you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Mercy And Compassion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "كما تَرْحَمُ تُرْحَمُ۔" This can be translated as:
Just as you show mercy, mercy will be shown to you.
This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of displaying mercy and compassion towards others, as it will ultimately lead to receiving mercy and compassion from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To fully comprehend the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (tarhamu) "تَرْحَمُ" is derived from the root word (rahima) "رَحِمَ", which means "to have mercy." It encompasses the act of showing kindness, forgiveness, and compassion towards others. The repetition of the word (turhamu) "تُرْحَمُ" emphasizes the reciprocity of mercy, indicating that the mercy we extend to others will be reciprocated and multiplied in return.
The concept of mercy is a recurring theme in the Quran, with numerous verses highlighting its importance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes Himself as (Ar-Rahman) "الرَّحْمَـٰنُ", the Most Merciful, and (Ar-Raheem) "الرَّحِيمُ", the Most Compassionate. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:69), Allah says,
But if you show mercy to others, surely Allah will show mercy to you.
This verse echoes the message of Imam Ali's Hadith, emphasizing the reciprocal nature of mercy.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:143), Allah instructs the believers to be a community of mercy and compassion:
And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.
Imam Ali's Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to embody the qualities of mercy and compassion in their interactions with others. By showing kindness and forgiveness, we not only fulfill the teachings of Islam but also create a harmonious and compassionate society. When we extend mercy to others, we are following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt, who were known for their immense compassion and forgiveness.
Practicing mercy has far-reaching consequences. When we show mercy, we inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of kindness and compassion. Our acts of mercy can have a transformative impact on individuals, families, and communities, fostering unity and understanding. Moreover, displaying mercy towards others is a means of seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy. In Surah An-Nur (24:22), Allah says,
And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of embodying mercy in our daily lives. It is through acts of kindness, forgiveness, and compassion that we can cultivate a society that is rooted in the teachings of Islam. Let us strive to be merciful towards others, knowing that our actions will be reciprocated by the Most Merciful, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to be embodiments of mercy and grant us His infinite compassion.
