(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

بالتِّواخي في اللّهِ تُثْمِرُ الاُخُوَّةَ۔

This can be translated as,

By establishing ties for the sake of Allah, brotherhood becomes fruitful.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith by examining its key words. The word (tawākhī) "تواخي" refers to establishing close and sincere bonds of brotherhood. It implies a deep connection and mutual support among individuals. The word (fī) "في" means "in" or

for the sake of.

It signifies that the bonds of brotherhood are established solely for the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Lastly, the word (thamar) "ثمر" means "fruitful" or "productive." It indicates that when ties are established for the sake of Allah, the brotherhood flourishes and bears positive outcomes.

To understand the significance of establishing ties for the sake of Allah, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of brotherhood and unity among Muslims in several verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers.

This verse highlights the unity and harmony that should exist among Muslims, emphasizing the need to resolve conflicts and disputes in a just manner. By establishing ties for the sake of Allah, we strengthen this brotherhood and promote peace and harmony within the Muslim community.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah states,

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding disputes and disagreements among believers, as it weakens their unity and diminishes their strength. By establishing ties for the sake of Allah, we prioritize unity over division, and this strengthens the bonds of brotherhood among Muslims.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to establish ties for the sake of Allah, as it leads to fruitful brotherhood. When we establish these ties, we are motivated by our love for Allah and our desire to please Him. This motivation drives us to prioritize the well-being and interests of our fellow Muslims, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity within the community.

Establishing ties for the sake of Allah has numerous positive consequences. Firstly, it creates a supportive and caring environment where individuals can rely on one another for help and guidance. This sense of brotherhood strengthens the community and enables Muslims to face challenges together, united in their faith.

Secondly, establishing ties for the sake of Allah promotes empathy and compassion. When we prioritize the pleasure of Allah in our relationships, we are more inclined to treat others with kindness and respect. This fosters a culture of compassion and understanding, where individuals genuinely care for one another's well-being.

Thirdly, establishing ties for the sake of Allah helps to overcome divisions and conflicts within the Muslim community. By focusing on our shared faith and the pleasure of Allah, we are able to transcend differences and work towards common goals. This unity is crucial in addressing societal issues and promoting positive change.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of establishing ties for the sake of Allah, as it leads to fruitful brotherhood. By prioritizing the pleasure of Allah in our relationships, we create a supportive and compassionate community that is united in faith. Let us strive to implement this teaching in our lives, fostering strong bonds of brotherhood and working towards the betterment of the Muslim ummah. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the ability to establish ties for His sake.
