— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Debt)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Too much debt makes a truthful person a liar and an honest person dishonest.

This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the negative consequences of excessive debt on an individual's character and integrity.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word "debt" in Arabic is (دَيْن) "dayn", which refers to a financial obligation or liability owed to someone. The term "truthful" is translated from the Arabic word (صَادِقَ) "sadiq", which signifies a person who consistently speaks the truth and upholds honesty. On the other hand, the word "liar" is derived from the Arabic term (كَاذِبًا) "kathib", which denotes someone who habitually tells falsehoods. Similarly, the word "honest" is translated from the Arabic word (مُنْجِزَ) "munjiz", which refers to an individual who fulfills their promises and obligations.

To comprehend the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 5:1)

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's obligations and commitments, including financial debts. Failing to honor these obligations can lead to negative consequences, as mentioned in the Hadith.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against taking on excessive debts, stating, (Quran 17:29)

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent

This verse cautions against burdening oneself with overwhelming debts that can lead to financial difficulties and a compromised sense of honesty.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the psychological and moral impact of excessive debt. When a person is overwhelmed by debt, they may resort to dishonesty or deception in order to escape their financial obligations. The pressure of debt can push individuals to make false promises, engage in fraudulent activities, or even resort to lying about their financial situation. This transformation from a truthful and honest individual to a liar and dishonest person is a consequence of the burden of debt.

Moreover, excessive debt can also lead to a loss of self-esteem and a compromised sense of integrity. When individuals find themselves unable to fulfill their financial obligations, they may experience feelings of shame and guilt. This can further erode their sense of honesty and integrity, as they may resort to dishonest means to maintain their image or avoid the consequences of their debts.

It is important for Muslims to heed the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and be cautious about taking on excessive debt. Islam encourages financial responsibility and discourages burdening oneself with unnecessary liabilities. Muslims are encouraged to live within their means, avoid unnecessary debts, and fulfill their financial obligations promptly.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the negative consequences of excessive debt on an individual's character and integrity. It highlights the importance of fulfilling financial obligations and warns against the psychological and moral impact of overwhelming debt. Muslims are encouraged to be financially responsible, avoid unnecessary debts, and maintain their honesty and integrity in all aspects of life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to make wise financial decisions and protect us from the pitfalls of excessive debt.
