You should love of the progeny of your Prophet, for this is the right of Allah over you and this will obligate your right upon Allah. Do you not see that Allah has said ‘Say, I do not ask you any reward for it except love of (my) near relatives.’.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of loving the progeny of the Prophet (ﷺ). He states that this love is not only a duty towards them but also a right that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has upon us. The Imam then draws our attention to a verse from the Quran, specifically Surah Ash-Shura, verse 23, where Allah says,
Say, I do not ask you any reward for it except love of (my) near relatives.
Let us delve deeper into the words and meanings of this hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran. The term (love) "حُبِّ" mentioned in the hadith is a powerful emotion that goes beyond mere affection. It encompasses a deep sense of attachment, care, and devotion. It is a love that is rooted in recognizing the special status and virtues of the Prophet's progeny.
The phrase (the progeny of your Prophet) "آلِ نَبِيِّكُمْ" refers to the Ahl al-Bayt, the family of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), which includes Imam Ali, Lady Fatimah, Imam Hasan, and Imam Husayn (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). These individuals hold a unique position in Islam, as they were chosen by Allah to be the leaders and guides of the Muslim Ummah.
The Imam reminds us that loving the Ahl al-Bayt is not only a religious duty but also a right that Allah has upon us. This means that our love for them is a means of fulfilling our obligations towards Allah. By loving and respecting the Ahl al-Bayt, we are fulfilling the command of Allah and demonstrating our obedience to Him.
To further understand the significance of this love, let us turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 33, Allah says,
Indeed, Allah wants to remove impurity from you, O people of the household, and purify you with a thorough purification.
This verse highlights the purity and righteousness of the Ahl al-Bayt and their role in guiding the Ummah towards the path of righteousness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, verse 61, Allah commands the believers to follow the example of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his family. This verse states,
Say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars [among us].'
The incident referred to in this verse is known as Mubahala, where the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) invited the Christians of Najran to a spiritual contest to invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars. The Prophet (ﷺ) chose his family, specifically Imam Ali, Lady Fatimah, Imam Hasan, and Imam Husayn, to represent the Muslim side. This demonstrates the elevated status of the Ahl al-Bayt and their association with the Prophet (ﷺ) in matters of utmost importance.
The love for the Ahl al-Bayt is not limited to a mere emotional attachment. It has profound implications for our faith and spirituality. By loving them, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ). This love serves as a motivation to follow their example, seek their guidance, and emulate their noble qualities.
Moreover, this love has far-reaching consequences in our lives. It strengthens the bonds of unity and brotherhood within the Muslim Ummah. It fosters a sense of compassion, empathy, and support for one another. It reminds us of the importance of upholding justice, defending the oppressed, and promoting peace and harmony.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of loving the progeny of the Prophet (ﷺ). This love is not only a duty towards them but also a right that Allah has upon us. It is a love that is deeply rooted in recognizing their unique status and virtues. By loving the Ahl al-Bayt, we fulfill our obligations towards Allah and align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran. This love has profound implications for our faith, spirituality, and the unity of the Muslim Ummah. May Allah grant us the ability to love and follow the Ahl al-Bayt and may He shower His blessings upon them.
