ضادُّوا القَسْوَةَ بِالرِّقَّةِ۔
Counter hard-heartedness with gentleness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hard-Heartedness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "ضادُّوا القَسْوَةَ بِالرِّقَّةِ۔" This can be translated as,
Counter hard-heartedness with gentleness.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (qaswah) "قَسْوَةَ" in this Hadith refers to hardness of the heart, a state in which a person becomes insensitive, unyielding, and lacking in compassion. It is a condition that distances one from the mercy and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). On the other hand, the word (riqqah) "رِّقَّةِ" means gentleness, tenderness, and softness of the heart. It is a quality that allows one to empathize, show kindness, and connect with others on a deeper level.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of softening our hearts and treating others with gentleness. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:159)
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].
This verse highlights the importance of softness and gentleness in dealing with others. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was a perfect example of this, as he treated people with kindness and compassion, even in the face of adversity. By doing so, he was able to win the hearts of his companions and bring about positive change in society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the embodiment of knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of countering hard-heartedness with gentleness. He recognized that a gentle approach has the power to melt even the hardest of hearts and bring about positive transformation. By responding to harshness with kindness, we can break the cycle of negativity and foster an environment of love and understanding.
In Surah Al-Anbiya, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 21:107)
And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.
This verse reminds us that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was sent as a mercy to all of humanity. As Muslims, it is our duty to follow his example and spread this mercy through our actions and interactions with others.
When we encounter someone who is hard-hearted, instead of responding in a similar manner, we should strive to counter their hardness with gentleness. This does not mean compromising our principles or enabling harmful behavior, but rather approaching the situation with wisdom, empathy, and compassion. By doing so, we can potentially soften their hearts and guide them towards a path of righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that gentleness is a powerful tool for positive change. It has the ability to bridge gaps, heal wounds, and build strong relationships. By countering hard-heartedness with gentleness, we can create a harmonious and compassionate society that reflects the teachings of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of countering hard-heartedness with gentleness. By softening our hearts and treating others with kindness and compassion, we can emulate the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and bring about positive change in our lives and the lives of those around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody this noble quality and spread His mercy to all.
