عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ يُقالُ: إنَّ فيهِ الشَّرَّ الَّذي يَعْلَمُ أنَّهُ فيهِ كَيْفَ يَسْخَطُ۔

I am surprised at the one about whom it is said: ‘Indeed in him there is evil,’ and he knows it is in him, how can he be annoyed?.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he expresses his astonishment towards a person who is aware of the presence of evil within themselves, yet still becomes annoyed or angered by it. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The key word in this Hadith is (evil) "شَّرَّ". This word refers to something harmful, negative, or morally wrong. It encompasses actions, intentions, and qualities that are detrimental to oneself and others. The transliteration of this word is "sharr".

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his surprise at someone who acknowledges the existence of evil within themselves, yet allows it to affect their emotions. This raises an important question: How can one be annoyed or angered by something they are fully aware of and have control over?

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286,

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse emphasizes that every individual has the capacity to control their emotions and reactions, even in the face of evil within themselves.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 84, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And say: 'My Lord! Cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit. And grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'

This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in order to overcome the challenges and temptations of evil within ourselves.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us a valuable lesson through this Hadith. He is reminding us that acknowledging our flaws and weaknesses is the first step towards self-improvement and spiritual growth. However, it is crucial not to let these flaws consume us or hinder our progress.

When we become annoyed or angered by the presence of evil within ourselves, we are allowing it to have power over us. Instead, we should strive to control our emotions and redirect our focus towards seeking Allah's forgiveness, guidance, and support. By doing so, we can transform our weaknesses into opportunities for personal development and spiritual elevation.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this quality of self-awareness and self-control. His profound knowledge and understanding of the Quran enabled him to navigate through the challenges of life with wisdom and patience. He recognized the presence of evil within himself but never allowed it to overpower his character or actions.

In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to reflect upon their own flaws and weaknesses. It teaches us the importance of self-awareness, self-control, and seeking Allah's guidance in order to overcome the evil within ourselves. By doing so, we can strive towards becoming better individuals and attaining spiritual excellence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our shortcomings and purify our hearts.
