طُوْبى لِمَنْ كَظَمَ غَيْظَهُ ولَمْ يُطْلِقْهُ، وعَصى أمْرَ نَفْسِهِ فَلَمْ يُهْلِكْهُ۔
Blessed is the one who suppresses his anger and does not let it loose, and [who] disobeys the command of his [carnal] soul and thus is not destroyed by it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Suppressing Anger)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights two important qualities that a Muslim should strive to possess. The first quality is the ability to suppress anger and not let it overpower one's actions. The second quality is the ability to resist the temptations of the carnal soul and not be led astray by its desires.
Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (ghaizhahu) "غَيْظَهُ" refers to anger or wrath. It is a natural emotion that can arise in response to various situations. However, the Hadith emphasizes the importance of controlling and suppressing this anger, rather than allowing it to be unleashed. The word (asaa) "عَصَى" means to disobey or go against. In this context, it refers to disobeying the desires and inclinations of the carnal soul, which often leads to destructive behavior.
To understand the significance of these qualities, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran, verse 134:
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of restraining anger, even in difficult circumstances. It is a quality that is beloved to Allah, and it reflects the strength of one's character.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 54, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Indeed, those who are patient and suppress their anger and forgive people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse reinforces the idea that suppressing anger and forgiving others are qualities that are highly regarded by Allah. They demonstrate a person's ability to control their emotions and act with patience and forbearance.
Now, let us reflect on the consequences of possessing these qualities. When a person suppresses their anger and does not let it loose, they are able to maintain peace and harmony in their relationships. They avoid saying or doing things in the heat of the moment that they may later regret. By restraining their anger, they are able to resolve conflicts in a more rational and constructive manner.
Similarly, when a person disobeys the command of their carnal soul, they are able to resist the temptations and desires that may lead them astray. This self-discipline allows them to make choices that are in line with their values and principles, rather than succumbing to their base desires. It protects them from engaging in sinful behavior and helps them to lead a righteous and fulfilling life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of suppressing anger and resisting the temptations of the carnal soul. These qualities are praised in the Quran and are highly regarded by Allah. By embodying these qualities, Muslims can maintain harmonious relationships, resolve conflicts peacefully, and lead a righteous and fulfilling life. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to embody these qualities in our daily lives.
