Hadith #10203

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

طُوبى لِمَنْ أطاعَ ناصِحاً يَهْديهِ وتَجَنَّبَ غاوِياً يُرْدِيهِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from a sincere adviser and avoiding the company of those who lead us astray.

Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. (nāsiḥan) "ناصِحاً" refers to an adviser or counselor who sincerely wishes to guide and benefit others. This person possesses wisdom, knowledge, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. (ghāwiyan) "غاوِياً" refers to someone who is misguided, deviant, or leads others astray. This person may have ill intentions or lack the proper understanding of the truth.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from those who possess knowledge and righteousness. In Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 7, Allah says,

And We sent not before you, [O Muhammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message if you do not know.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 28, Allah narrates the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr (a wise servant of Allah). When Musa sought to accompany Khidr and learn from him, Khidr replied, (Quran 18:68)

Indeed, with me you will never be able to have patience. And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?

This verse teaches us the importance of seeking guidance from those who possess knowledge beyond our own, as they can guide us in ways we may not understand.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, advises us to follow the counsel of a sincere adviser who guides us towards the right path. This adviser is someone who possesses deep understanding of the religion and has our best interests at heart. On the other hand, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us to stay away from those who are misguided and lead others towards destruction. These individuals may have ulterior motives or lack the proper understanding of the truth. Associating with them can lead us astray and cause harm to our faith and well-being.

The consequences of following the advice of a sincere adviser or falling into the company of the misguided are profound. By following the counsel of a sincere adviser, we can attain spiritual growth, make informed decisions, and avoid pitfalls that may lead us astray. Conversely, if we choose to follow the misguided, we risk losing our way, straying from the path of righteousness, and facing the consequences of our actions.

In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to seek guidance from those who possess knowledge and righteousness. By following the advice of sincere advisers, we can navigate through the challenges of life and stay on the right path.
