لَنْ يَحْصُلَ الأجْرُ حَتّى يُتَجَرَّعَ الصَّبْرُ۔
Reward will never be acquired until [the bitter pill of] patience is swallowed.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Reward will never be acquired until [the bitter pill of] patience is swallowed.
This impactful Hadith highlights the importance of patience in attaining rewards and blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a comprehensive understanding. The key word in this Hadith is (sabr) "صَبْرُ", which translates to "patience." Patience is a virtue that encompasses endurance, perseverance, and steadfastness in the face of difficulties, trials, and tribulations. It is the ability to remain calm and composed, seeking solace and strength in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during challenging times.
The Hadith emphasizes that acquiring rewards and blessings requires the act of (tajarra'a) "تَجَرَّعَ", which means "to swallow." Just as swallowing a bitter pill requires effort and determination, patience also requires a conscious decision to embrace and internalize it. It is not enough to merely possess patience; one must actively practice and embody it in their daily lives.
To further understand the significance of patience in Islam, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience and its rewards. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153), Allah says,
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the connection between patience and seeking Allah's assistance. It reminds us that through patience, we can find solace and strength in our relationship with Allah.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah states,
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse encourages believers to persevere and endure in their faith, reminding them that success lies in their ability to remain steadfast and patient.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that rewards and blessings are not easily attained. They require effort, sacrifice, and the willingness to embrace patience. Just as a bitter pill may initially be difficult to swallow, patience may be challenging to practice in times of adversity. However, it is through patience that we demonstrate our trust in Allah's wisdom and plan for us.
When we face trials and tribulations with patience, we develop resilience, strengthen our faith, and grow closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Patience allows us to maintain a positive mindset, seek solutions, and persevere through hardships. It is through patience that we can find peace and contentment, knowing that Allah's rewards are reserved for those who endure with patience.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that rewards and blessings are not easily acquired. They require the bitter pill of patience to be swallowed. By embracing patience, we demonstrate our trust in Allah's plan and seek His assistance. Let us strive to cultivate patience in our lives, knowing that through it, we can attain the rewards and blessings promised by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the strength to embody patience in all aspects of our lives.
