Hadith #217

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of avoiding conflict and fighting. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims not to call for fighting, as it is a destructive and harmful act. However, if one is called to fight, they should respond to defend themselves and uphold justice.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by analyzing the key words and phrases used. The word (mubarazah) "مُبَارَزَةٍ" refers to a physical confrontation or combat. It implies a situation where individuals engage in direct combat with one another. The word (du'ita) "دُعِيتَ" means to be called or invited. In this context, it refers to being summoned or provoked to engage in fighting.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims not to initiate or call for fighting. This aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of peace and avoiding aggression. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:190):

Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.

However, if one is called to fight, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to respond. This response should be based on the principles of justice and self-defense. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:39):

Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that the one who calls for fighting is a rebel, seeking to cause chaos and harm. The word (baghin) "بَاغٍ" refers to a rebel or aggressor who transgresses the boundaries of justice. The consequences of rebellion and aggression are destruction and defeat, as mentioned in the Hadith.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for peace and avoid unnecessary conflicts. It highlights the importance of upholding justice and defending oneself when faced with aggression. It also emphasizes the need to be cautious of those who incite violence and rebellion, as their actions lead to destruction.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, which is evident in his teachings and actions. His deep understanding of the Quran enabled him to provide profound insights into various aspects of life, including matters of conflict and peace.

We should prioritize peaceful solutions, avoid aggression, and only resort to self-defense when necessary. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the path of peace and justice, and protect us from the harm of rebellion and aggression.
