Hadith #5829

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Silence that covers you with honour is better than speech that earns you regret.

This beautiful saying highlights the virtue of silence and its superiority over speaking in certain situations. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (silence) "صَمْتٌ" refers to refraining from speaking or remaining quiet. It is a state of withholding one's words. The word (covers you) "يَكْسُوكَ" implies that silence envelops an individual, protecting and adorning them with honor and dignity. On the other hand, the word (speech) "قَوْل" signifies the act of expressing oneself through words. It is important to note that the Hadith does not condemn speech in general, but rather emphasizes the virtue of silence in specific circumstances.

The Quran provides us with several verses that support the wisdom behind this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages us to speak with goodness and kindness, choosing our words wisely. It reminds us that Satan seeks to create discord and division through our speech, and thus, it is crucial to exercise caution in our words.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

This verse reminds us that Allah is fully aware of the intentions and actions of His creation. It emphasizes the importance of seeking His guidance and relying on His wisdom. In the context of the Hadith, remaining silent allows us to reflect and seek Allah's guidance before speaking, thus avoiding regrettable words.

Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.
