Hadith #4194

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لا تُصِرَّ على ما يُعَقِّبُ الإثْمَ۔

This can be translated as,

Do not persist in that which is followed by sin.

This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds great significance and guidance for all Muslims.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (tusirra) "تُصِرَّ" comes from the root word (sarra) "صَرَّ", which means to persist or insist on something. It implies continuously engaging in an action or behavior. The word (yu'aqqibu) "يُعَقِّبُ" comes from the root word (aqaaba) "عَقَبَ", which means to follow or be accompanied by something. In this context, it refers to the consequences or outcomes that follow a particular action. And finally, the word (ithm) "إثْمَ" means sin, referring to any action that goes against the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195,

And do not throw yourselves into destruction.

This verse warns us against engaging in actions that lead to harm or destruction, both in this world and in the hereafter. It emphasizes the importance of avoiding persisting in actions that have negative consequences.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 33, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Say, 'My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.'

This verse highlights the prohibition of sin and immoralities, and the importance of avoiding actions that are not sanctioned by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the need to be cautious and mindful of our actions. It advises us not to persist in actions that lead to sin and its consequences. This guidance is rooted in the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the importance of avoiding sinful behavior and seeking forgiveness for our transgressions.

By adhering to this advice, we protect ourselves from the negative consequences of sin and strive to lead a righteous and fulfilling life. Persisting in sinful actions can lead to a downward spiral, where the sins become habitual and the heart becomes hardened. It can distance us from the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and hinder our spiritual growth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us to be vigilant in our actions and to constantly evaluate their consequences. He encourages us to seek repentance and turn back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) whenever we find ourselves persisting in actions that lead to sin.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
