أفْضَلُ الكُنُوزِ مَعْرُوفٌ يُودَعُ(يُودِعُهُ) الأحْرارُ، وعِلْمٌ يَتَدارَسَهُ الأخْيارُ۔
The best of treasures are: the good turn that is consigned to (or by) the free and the knowledge that is learned by the virtuous.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best of treasures are: the good turn that is consigned to (or by) the free and the knowledge that is learned by the virtuous.
This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the importance of two treasures that hold immense value in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their significance. The term "ma'ruf" refers to a good or virtuous act that is recognized and appreciated by society. It encompasses acts of kindness, charity, and benevolence. The word "yudaa" or "yudia'uhu" means to entrust or consign something to someone. In this context, it implies that the good turn is entrusted to the free, indicating that those who are free from any ulterior motives or selfish desires are the ones who truly appreciate and value acts of goodness.
The second treasure mentioned in the Hadith is "ilm" or knowledge. Knowledge is a powerful tool that distinguishes humans from other creations and enables them to seek the truth and understand the world around them. The word "yatadarasahu" means to study or learn. Here, it signifies the acquisition of knowledge by the virtuous, emphasizing the importance of seeking knowledge with sincerity and righteousness.
To further understand the significance of these treasures, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the importance of performing good deeds and acts of charity, which are considered treasures in the sight of Allah.
In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the significance of knowledge and the distinction it brings. Those who seek knowledge and strive to understand the teachings of Islam are elevated in their status and rewarded by Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize acts of goodness and the pursuit of knowledge. By performing good deeds and acts of kindness, we not only benefit others but also purify our own souls. These acts of goodness are treasures that are cherished by the free, those who are sincere and selfless in their intentions.
Similarly, seeking knowledge is a lifelong journey that leads to personal growth and spiritual enlightenment. The pursuit of knowledge should be accompanied by virtuous intentions and a sincere desire to understand and implement the teachings of Islam. The knowledge gained by the virtuous is a treasure that enriches their lives and enables them to make informed decisions based on the guidance of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of two treasures: acts of goodness and the acquisition of knowledge. These treasures hold immense value in the sight of Allah and should be cherished and pursued by Muslims. By performing good deeds and seeking knowledge with sincerity and righteousness, we can strive to emulate the teachings of Islam and lead a life that is pleasing to Allah. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the ability to appreciate and uphold these treasures.
