Hadith #7267

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the responsibility of an intelligent person to reflect upon their actions and conduct. The key words in this Hadith are (intelligent) "لَّبِيب", (evil) "سُوء", (ugly) "قُبْح", (conduct) "سيرَة", (wretchedness) "شَقَاوَة", and (misfortune) "نَحْس".

The word "لَّبِيب" refers to someone who possesses intelligence, wisdom, and understanding. It is the duty of such a person to critically assess their actions and recognize the presence of evil within themselves. This self-awareness is a sign of their intelligence and spiritual growth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to reflect upon their actions in the Quran, as He says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18),

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes that the intelligent person should also consider their conduct as being a reflection of their wretchedness and misfortune. This means that one should not only focus on their individual actions but also on their overall behavior and character. The Quran supports this notion in Surah Al-Qalam (68:2-4), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And you are not, by the favor of your Lord, a madman. And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted. And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

Reflecting on one's evil actions and ugly conduct serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it allows individuals to recognize their flaws and weaknesses, enabling them to seek forgiveness and repentance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This self-accountability is essential for personal growth and spiritual development. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to seek forgiveness in the Quran, as He says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:53),

Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'

Secondly, reflecting on one's evil actions and ugly conduct helps individuals identify the root causes of their behavior. It allows them to analyze their circumstances, motivations, and influences that contribute to their negative actions. By understanding these factors, individuals can take proactive measures to rectify their behavior and make positive changes in their lives. The Quran emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

Lastly, reflecting on one's evil actions and ugly conduct instills a sense of humility and self-awareness. It reminds individuals of their inherent imperfections and the need for continuous self-improvement. This humility allows individuals to develop empathy towards others, as they recognize their own faults and shortcomings. The Quran teaches us the importance of humility in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

We sent messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners so that mankind will have no argument against Allah after the messengers. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
