— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Establishing Ties And Relations)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong relationships and avoiding any actions that may sever these ties. The words used in this Hadith are (tawāṣul) "التَّواصُلِ" and (mūāfāqah) "المُوافَقَةِ" which can be translated as "establishing ties" and "coming to agreements" respectively. On the other hand, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns against (muqāṭaʿah) "المُقاطَعَةِ" which means "severing ties" and (muhājarah) "المُهاجَرَةِ" which means "forsaking one another."

The importance of maintaining ties and coming to agreements can be found in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:1),

They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, 'The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger.' So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers.

This verse highlights the need for Muslims to come to agreements and resolve their disputes in a just manner, following the guidance of Allah and His Messenger.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of establishing ties and resolving conflicts among believers. It reminds Muslims that they are part of a larger brotherhood and should strive for unity and harmony.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warning against severing ties and forsaking one another is also supported by the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse reminds Muslims to avoid any actions that may lead to division, ridicule, or insults among themselves.

Severing ties and forsaking one another can have serious consequences. It can lead to the breakdown of relationships, division within the community, and the weakening of the Muslim ummah as a whole. On the other hand, establishing ties and coming to agreements fosters unity, cooperation, and a sense of brotherhood among Muslims.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, advises Muslims to prioritize maintaining strong relationships and resolving conflicts through peaceful means. His words serve as a reminder for Muslims to always strive for unity, understanding, and cooperation, following the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad ().

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of establishing ties and coming to agreements, while warning against severing ties and forsaking one another. This teaching is supported by various Quranic verses that highlight the significance of unity, brotherhood, and resolving conflicts in a just and peaceful manner. Muslims should strive to follow this advice, as it leads to a stronger and more harmonious community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in maintaining strong relationships and resolving conflicts with wisdom and compassion.
