(Ghurar al-Hikam: Silence)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtues of silence and contentment. Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

The word (silence) "صَمْتَ" refers to refraining from speaking unnecessary words or engaging in idle talk. It is a virtue that promotes tranquility and peace within oneself and in society. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages silence in the Quran, stating in Surah Al-A'raf (7:204):

And when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the importance of attentively listening to the words of Allah, rather than engaging in unnecessary speech.

The word (safety) "نَجَاةُ" signifies protection and deliverance from harm. By embracing silence, one can avoid falling into the traps of backbiting, gossip, and spreading falsehoods. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12):

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

By practicing silence, we protect ourselves from engaging in harmful speech and preserve our own well-being.

The word (security) "سَلَامَةُ" refers to being free from danger and harm. When we choose silence over unnecessary speech, we create an environment of peace and harmony. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83):

And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

By speaking good words and maintaining silence when necessary, we contribute to the security and well-being of our communities.

The word (contentment) "رِضَا" refers to being satisfied and accepting of one's circumstances. It is a quality that brings inner peace and tranquility. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages contentment in the Quran, stating in Surah At-Talaq (65:3):

And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

By being content with what Allah has provided us, we find true happiness and fulfillment.

The word (prosperity) "غَنَاءُ" refers to abundance and richness. When we embrace contentment, we are freed from the constant pursuit of material possessions and desires. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201):

And of them are those who say, 'Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

By seeking contentment rather than material wealth, we attain true prosperity in this world and the Hereafter.

The word (honour) "كَرَامَةُ" signifies dignity and respect. Contentment allows us to appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah and to be grateful for what we have. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah An-Nahl (16:53):

And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allah. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.

By embracing contentment, we honor the blessings of Allah and maintain our dignity in times of difficulty.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the virtues of silence and contentment. By practicing silence, we protect ourselves from harmful speech and create an environment of peace and security. By embracing contentment, we find true prosperity and honor in this world and the Hereafter. Let us strive to implement these teachings in our lives and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) by following the guidance of the Quran. May Allah grant us the ability to embody these virtues and attain success in this life and the Hereafter.
