اَلذِّكْرُ يُؤْنِسُ اللُبَّ، ويُنيرُ القَلْبَ، ويَسْتَنْزِلُ الرَّحمَةَ۔
Remembering [Allah] comforts the soul, illuminates the heart and brings down the mercy [of Allah].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of remembering Allah and its profound effects on the soul and heart. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its meanings and implications in light of the Quran.
The word (dhikr) "ذِكْر" in Arabic refers to the remembrance of Allah. It encompasses various forms of worship, such as reciting the Quran, praising Allah, and seeking His forgiveness. Dhikr is not limited to mere verbal repetition; it involves internalizing the presence of Allah in one's heart and mind.
The Hadith states that remembering Allah (yu'nisu al-lubb) "يُؤْنِسُ اللُبَّ", which can be translated as "comforts the soul." This phrase highlights the deep sense of tranquility and peace that one experiences when engaging in sincere remembrance of Allah. It is through dhikr that the heart finds solace and contentment, even in the midst of trials and tribulations.
The Hadith further states that dhikr (yuniru al-qalb) "يُنيرُ القَلْبَ", meaning it "illuminates the heart." This imagery signifies the enlightening effect of dhikr on the spiritual state of an individual. When one engages in the remembrance of Allah, their heart becomes illuminated with divine light, guiding them towards righteousness and clarity of thought. This illumination allows one to discern between right and wrong, and to navigate through the challenges of life with wisdom and insight.
Moreover, the Hadith states that dhikr (yastanzilu ar-rahmah) "يَسْتَنْزِلُ الرَّحمَةَ", which can be translated as
brings down the mercy [of Allah].
This phrase emphasizes the connection between dhikr and the divine mercy of Allah. When a person remembers Allah sincerely and consistently, they open themselves up to the abundant mercy and blessings of Allah. This mercy encompasses forgiveness, guidance, protection, and all forms of divine favor that lead to spiritual and worldly success.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. For instance, Allah says in Surah Al-Ra'd (13:28),
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.
This verse echoes the Hadith's assertion that dhikr brings comfort and tranquility to the heart.
In Surah Al-Anfal (8:45), Allah says,
O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful.
This verse highlights the connection between dhikr and success in times of difficulty and struggle. By remembering Allah abundantly, believers find the strength and guidance to overcome challenges and achieve victory.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:152), Allah says,
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
This verse emphasizes the reciprocal nature of dhikr. When we remember Allah, He, in turn, remembers us and showers us with His blessings and mercy.
Reflecting on the profound exegesis of this Hadith, we realize the immense importance of dhikr in our lives as Muslims. Through sincere remembrance of Allah, we find solace, guidance, and divine mercy. Dhikr illuminates our hearts, enabling us to navigate through the challenges of life with wisdom and clarity. Let us strive to incorporate dhikr into our daily routines, seeking the comfort and blessings that it brings. May Allah grant us the ability to remember Him abundantly and may He shower us with His mercy and blessings.
