اَلزُّهْدُ أقَلُّ ما يُوجَدُ، وأجَلُّ ما يُعْهَدُ، ويَمْدَحُهُ الكُلُّ، ويَتْرُكُهُ الجُلُّ۔

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of "zuhd" or renunciation of worldly pleasures. Zuhd refers to detachment from the materialistic aspects of life and prioritizing the spiritual and eternal aspects. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes zuhd as something that is rarely found among people, yet it is the loftiest and most noble quality that can be observed.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this profound Hadith. The word "zuhd" itself means renunciation or detachment. It is derived from the root word "zahada," which means to abstain or refrain. Zuhd is not about complete abandonment of worldly possessions, but rather about not being attached to them and not allowing them to distract us from our ultimate purpose in life - seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

And of them are some who say, 'Our Lord, grant us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse teaches us that while it is permissible to seek the blessings of this world, our primary focus should be on seeking goodness in the Hereafter.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the transient nature of worldly possessions:

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse reminds us that material possessions are merely temporary adornments of this worldly life, whereas the good deeds we accumulate will have eternal rewards.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on zuhd serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual growth and connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over the pursuit of worldly pleasures. By practicing zuhd, one can detach themselves from the distractions of this world and focus on the ultimate goal of attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Zuhd does not mean complete abandonment of worldly responsibilities or possessions. Rather, it entails using them in a way that aligns with the teachings of Islam and does not distract us from our spiritual journey. It involves recognizing the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and not becoming attached to them.

Practicing zuhd can have profound consequences on an individual's life. It allows one to develop a deeper connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strengthens their faith. It helps in overcoming the temptations and distractions of this world, leading to a more focused and purposeful life. Zuhd also cultivates gratitude and contentment, as one becomes less reliant on material possessions for happiness.
