(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

The best speech is that which is not dismissed by the ears and is not difficult for the minds to comprehend.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ahsanu) "أحْسَنُ" in Arabic means the best or the most excellent. It signifies the highest level of goodness and perfection. The word (alkalam) "الكَلامِ" refers to speech or words. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing the importance of using the best and most excellent words in our communication.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that the best speech is one that (la tamujjuhu al-a'dhan) "لا تَمُجُّهُ الآذانُ", meaning it is not dismissed by the ears. This implies that the best speech is one that captures the attention of the listeners and resonates with them. It is not easily ignored or disregarded. This highlights the importance of effective communication that engages and connects with others.

Additionally, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the best speech is one that (la yut'ibu fahmuhu al-afham)

لا يُتْعِبُ فَهْمُهُ الأفْهامَ

meaning it is not difficult for the minds to comprehend. This emphasizes the need for clarity and simplicity in our speech. The best speech is one that can be easily understood and grasped by people from different backgrounds and levels of knowledge.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good speech and effective communication. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:83)

And speak to people good [words]

This verse encourages us to use kind and beneficial words when interacting with others.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nahl, Allah says, (Quran 16:125)

Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best

This verse highlights the importance of using wisdom and choosing the best words when conveying the message of Islam to others. It emphasizes the need to communicate in a manner that is respectful, persuasive, and easily understood.

The consequences of following Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance in this Hadith are profound. When we use the best speech, one that captures the attention of others and is easily comprehensible, we create a positive impact on those around us. Our words become a means of guidance, inspiration, and motivation for others. They are more likely to be influenced by our message and be receptive to it.

Conversely, if our speech is dismissive or difficult to understand, it may lead to misunderstandings, confusion, and even alienation. Our message may not reach the hearts and minds of others, and the opportunity for positive change may be lost.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of choosing our words carefully and speaking with wisdom and clarity. We should strive to communicate in a manner that engages and connects with others, making our message accessible and impactful. By doing so, we can fulfill our responsibility as Muslims to convey the message of Islam effectively and contribute to a more harmonious and understanding society.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to use the best speech and to communicate in a manner that is pleasing to Him and beneficial to others. Ameen.
