Hadith #1598

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the stark contrast between those who prioritize their worldly desires, specifically their stomach and private parts, and those who strive for goodness. The term (stomach) "بَطْنُهُ" refers to the desire for material wealth, gluttony, and indulgence in worldly pleasures. When one's desires are solely driven by the satisfaction of their physical urges, they become oblivious to the spiritual and moral consequences of their actions.

To understand the significance of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 70, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of prioritizing worldly desires over the pursuit of goodness. Allah says, (Quran 17:70)

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.

This verse reminds us that Allah has bestowed upon us numerous blessings and favors, including sustenance and provision. However, these blessings should not become the sole focus of our lives. We should not allow our desires for material wealth and physical pleasure to overshadow our pursuit of goodness and righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 77, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of those who prioritize worldly gains and neglect their spiritual growth. Allah says, (Quran 28:77)

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse reminds us that while we are allowed to enjoy the blessings of this world, our ultimate goal should be the pursuit of the Hereafter. We should not forget our responsibilities towards others and the importance of doing good deeds. Neglecting our spiritual growth and indulging in corrupt practices will distance us from goodness and righteousness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual development and the pursuit of goodness over their worldly desires. Conversely, those who prioritize goodness over their worldly desires are driven by a higher purpose. They seek to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to make a positive impact on the world around them. Their actions are guided by the principles of justice, compassion, and righteousness. They are motivated by the desire to attain the pleasure of Allah and to earn His eternal rewards.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) wise utterance serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their pursuit of goodness and righteousness over their worldly desires.
