Yielding to anger leads to regret and disobedience.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anger)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

طاعَةُ الغَضَبِ نَدَمٌ وعِصْيانٌ۔

This translates to

Yielding to anger leads to regret and disobedience.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ta'at) "طاعَةُ" in this Hadith refers to obedience or submission. It implies following the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and refraining from actions that are prohibited. The word (al-ghadab) "الغَضَبِ" means anger, a strong emotion that can cloud one's judgment and lead to impulsive actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that yielding to anger can have detrimental consequences. It can result in regret and disobedience. When we act out of anger, we often make decisions that we later regret. These decisions may harm ourselves or others, and we may realize that our anger clouded our judgment. Moreover, anger can lead to disobedience, causing us to transgress the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Quran provides guidance on controlling anger and its negative consequences. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134),

Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse emphasizes the importance of restraining anger and forgiving others, as it is an act that is beloved by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse reminds us to control our anger and avoid insulting or belittling others. It highlights the importance of treating others with respect and kindness, even in moments of disagreement or conflict.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to exercise self-control and refrain from acting impulsively out of anger. It urges us to reflect upon the consequences of our actions and the potential regret that may follow. By restraining our anger and seeking guidance from the Quran, we can avoid disobedience and strive to be individuals who are patient, forgiving, and compassionate.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of controlling our anger. It warns us that yielding to anger can lead to regret and disobedience. By following the guidance of the Quran, we can learn to restrain our anger, forgive others, and make decisions that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to control our emotions and act in accordance with His teachings.
