إيّاكُمْ وصَرَعاتِ البَغْيِ، وفَضَحاتِ الغَدْرِ، وإثارَةَ كامِنِ الشَّرِّ المُذَمِّمِ۔
Avoid the downfalls of transgression, the disgraces of deceit and the arousal of the latent, reprehensible evil.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises the Muslims to avoid three destructive actions: the downfalls of transgression, the disgraces of deceit, and the arousal of the latent, reprehensible evil.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words used in this hadith. The word (sarā'āt) "صَرَعَاتِ" refers to the downfalls or pitfalls of transgression. It signifies the harmful consequences and negative outcomes that result from crossing the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Transgression refers to exceeding the limits of what is permissible, whether it be in matters of faith, ethics, or social interactions.
The term (fadahāt) "فَضَحَاتِ" denotes the disgraces or humiliations that arise from deceit. It highlights the shame and dishonor that befall individuals who engage in deception, falsehood, and betrayal. Deceit not only harms others but also tarnishes the character and integrity of the person who practices it.
Lastly, the phrase (ithārat kamini al-sharri al-mudhammim)
إثارَةَ كامِنِ الشَّرِّ المُذَمِّمِ
refers to the arousal or awakening of the latent, reprehensible evil. It warns against stirring up the hidden vices and evil inclinations that lie dormant within individuals. These inclinations, if awakened, can lead to destructive behavior and harm to oneself and others.
To understand the significance of Imam Ali's advice, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of avoiding transgression, deceit, and evil inclinations.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:190)
And do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors.
This verse reminds us of the consequences of transgression and the displeasure of Allah towards those who exceed the limits set by Him. Transgression not only leads to harm in this world but also incurs the wrath of Allah in the Hereafter.
In Surah Al-Isra, Allah warns against deceit and falsehood, saying, (Quran 17:34-35)
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best, until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned. And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.
These verses highlight the importance of honesty, integrity, and fulfilling one's commitments. Deceit and betrayal not only harm others but also invite accountability and questioning from Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, Allah warns against the evil inclinations that lie within individuals, saying, (Quran 20:131)
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
This verse reminds us not to be enticed by the temporary pleasures of this world, as they can awaken our latent evil inclinations and lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali's advice serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to be cautious and mindful of their actions. By avoiding transgression, deceit, and the arousal of evil inclinations, we protect ourselves from the harmful consequences and displeasure of Allah. It is essential to strive for righteousness, honesty, and self-control, as these qualities lead to a virtuous and fulfilling life.
Let us reflect on Imam Ali's thought-provoking words and strive to implement them in our daily lives. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the downfalls of transgression, the disgraces of deceit, and the arousal of latent, reprehensible evil.
