Hadith #4716

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

السَّخاءُ عُنْوانُ المُرُوَّةِ والنُّبْلِ۔

This can be translated as,

Generosity is the symbol of magnanimity and nobility.

Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith.

Firstly, (Al-Sakhā') "السَّخاءُ" refers to the act of being generous, giving freely, and being open-handed. It encompasses not only material possessions but also encompasses kindness, compassion, and benevolence towards others. It is a quality that reflects the inner beauty of a person's character.

Secondly, (‘Unwān) "عُنْوانُ" means a symbol or an emblem. It is something that represents or signifies a particular quality or characteristic. In the context of this Hadith, it signifies that generosity is a distinguishing mark or a visible sign of two important qualities: (Al-Murū'ah) "المُرُوَّةِ" and (Al-Nubl) "النُّبْلِ".

Now, let us turn to the Quran to find verses that support and shed light on the profound wisdom contained in this Hadith.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Insan (76:8-9),

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

This verse highlights the essence of generosity, where believers give without expecting anything in return. They give out of love for Allah and seek His pleasure alone. Their generosity is not motivated by personal gain or recognition but stems from a sincere desire to help those in need.

Another verse that emphasizes the importance of generosity is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse illustrates the immense blessings and rewards that come with acts of generosity. Just as a single seed can yield a bountiful harvest, the act of giving generously multiplies the rewards manifold. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, ensures that those who give selflessly are abundantly rewarded in this life and the hereafter.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that generosity is not merely an act of giving material possessions but is a reflection of one's inner character. It is a symbol of magnanimity and nobility, distinguishing those who possess these qualities.

When a person is generous, they display a sense of magnanimity by willingly sharing their blessings with others.
