(Ghurar al-Hikam: Rancor And Perfidy)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of self-deception and disobedience towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (aghsh) "أغَشَّ" in the Hadith refers to someone who is deceitful, treacherous, and cunning. It describes a person who engages in self-deception and manipulates others for their own personal gain. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us that the most perfidious and deceitful individuals are those who deceive themselves and disobey their Lord.

To understand the significance of this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 9:

They deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves and perceive it not.

This verse emphasizes that those who deceive others are ultimately deceiving themselves, as their actions are in direct opposition to the truth and guidance of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 19, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns:

And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.

This verse highlights the consequence of forgetting Allah and neglecting His commands. Those who disobey Allah are, in fact, forgetting their own true selves and falling into a state of spiritual heedlessness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and self-aware. It urges us to reflect upon our actions and intentions, ensuring that we are not deceiving ourselves or others. By being truthful to ourselves and obedient to our Lord, we can avoid falling into the trap of self-deception and perfidy.

When a person deceives themselves and disobeys Allah, they are essentially denying their own potential for growth and spiritual development. They become trapped in a cycle of falsehood and are unable to attain true happiness and fulfillment. On the other hand, those who are sincere and obedient to Allah experience a sense of inner peace and contentment, as they align their actions with the divine will.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) wise utterance serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to constantly evaluate their actions and intentions. It encourages us to strive for self-improvement and to be mindful of our relationship with Allah. By being truthful to ourselves and obedient to our Lord, we can avoid the pitfalls of self-deception and perfidy, and instead, lead a life of righteousness and spiritual fulfillment.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to the path of truth and righteousness, and protect us from the deceit of our own selves. May we always strive to be obedient to our Lord and seek His pleasure in all that we do. Ameen.
