One whose grief over his soul is prolonged in this world, Allah will give him delight on the Day of Resurrection and put him in the Eternal Abode [in Paradise].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One whose grief over his soul is prolonged in this world, Allah will give him delight on the Day of Resurrection and put him in the Eternal Abode [in Paradise].
This enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of enduring hardships and sorrows in this worldly life for the sake of one's soul and ultimate salvation.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (taala) "طالَ" means to prolong or extend, while (huznuhu) "حُزْنُهُ" refers to grief or sorrow. (nafsihi) "نَفْسِهِ" signifies one's own self or soul, and (dunya) "دُّنيا" refers to this worldly life. (aqqara) "أقَرَّ" means to give delight or pleasure, and (Allah) "اللّهُ" is the name of the Almighty.
To comprehend the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and does not burden us with more than we can handle. Therefore, when we face grief and sorrow in this world, we should remember that it is a test from Allah and have faith that we have the strength to endure it.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in Surah Al-Insan (76:11),
And We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.
This verse reminds us that Allah is always with those who strive to do good and remain steadfast in their faith, even in times of grief and hardship. Therefore, when we experience prolonged grief over our souls, we should seek solace in the fact that Allah is guiding us and supporting us through our struggles.
The consequences of enduring grief over one's soul in this world are beautifully described in the Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) assures us that those who patiently endure their sorrows will be rewarded with delight on the Day of Resurrection. This delight is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and grace, as He will alleviate their grief and grant them eternal happiness in the Abode of Paradise.
It is important to reflect on the motivation behind enduring grief over one's soul in this world. This motivation lies in recognizing the temporary nature of this worldly life and the eternal nature of the hereafter. As Muslims, we believe that this life is a test, and the true reward lies in the eternal life to come. By enduring grief and sorrows for the sake of our souls, we are prioritizing our ultimate salvation and seeking the pleasure of Allah.
