Hadith #6825

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Interact with people through your tongues and your bodies, but part from them with your hearts and your actions.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of sincere and genuine interactions with others, both in speech and in physical conduct. It also highlights the significance of maintaining a pure heart and righteous actions when disengaging from people.

Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (khalitoo) "خالِطُوا" means to interact or associate with others. The phrase (bi alsinatikum wa ajasadi kum) "بِألْسِنَتِكُمْ وأجْسادِكُمْ" translates to

through your tongues and your bodies.

However, the Hadith also advises us to (zailoohum bi quloobikum wa a'malikum) "زايِلُوهُمْ بِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَأعْمالِكُمْ", which means to part from others with our hearts and our actions. This implies that while we may interact with people on the surface, our true feelings and intentions should remain pure and sincere. We should not let negative emotions or ill will towards others affect our hearts. Similarly, our actions should reflect our true character, even when we are no longer in direct contact with others.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect and refraining from belittling or mocking them. It encourages us to interact with people in a way that promotes unity and understanding.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse highlights the importance of choosing our words wisely and speaking in a manner that is beneficial and respectful. It reminds us that our interactions should be guided by the principles of goodness and righteousness.
