اَلفِكْرُ في غَيْرِ الحِكْمَةِ هَوَسٌ۔
Thinking outside [the bounds of] wisdom is folly.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الفِكْرُ في غَيْرِ الحِكْمَةِ هَوَسٌ۔
This can be translated as,
Thinking outside [the bounds of] wisdom is folly.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (fikr) "فِكْرُ" in Arabic refers to the act of thinking, contemplating, or reflecting upon something. It encompasses the intellectual process of pondering over matters and seeking understanding. (ghayr) "غَيْرِ" means "outside" or "beyond," indicating a departure from a certain boundary or limit. (al-hikmah) "الحِكْمَةِ" refers to wisdom, which is the ability to apply knowledge and understanding in a balanced and beneficial manner.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against engaging in thoughts or ideas that are not rooted in wisdom. This implies that when we venture outside the boundaries of wisdom, our thinking becomes futile and misguided. It is a reminder to Muslims to always seek knowledge and understanding before forming opinions or making decisions.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of seeking wisdom and knowledge. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:30)
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.' They said, 'Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?' Allah said, 'Indeed, I know that which you do not know.'
This verse highlights the wisdom behind Allah's decision to appoint humans as His successors on earth. It demonstrates that Allah possesses knowledge and wisdom beyond our comprehension. Therefore, it is essential for us as Muslims to acknowledge our limited understanding and seek wisdom from Allah and His teachings.
When we engage in thinking outside the bounds of wisdom, we risk falling into folly and making irrational decisions. This can have severe consequences in our personal lives, relationships, and society as a whole. For example, if we base our actions on misguided thoughts or ideas, we may harm ourselves or others unintentionally. Our decisions may lack foresight and consideration of the long-term consequences.
Furthermore, thinking outside the bounds of wisdom can lead to the spread of misinformation, misunderstandings, and division within the Muslim community. It is crucial for us to rely on authentic sources of knowledge, such as the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), to ensure that our thoughts and ideas are grounded in wisdom.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly seek knowledge, reflect upon it, and apply it in a wise and balanced manner. It encourages us to question our thoughts and ideas, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can avoid falling into folly and make informed decisions that benefit ourselves and society as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of thinking within the bounds of wisdom. It reminds us to seek knowledge, reflect upon it, and apply it in a balanced and beneficial manner. By doing so, we can avoid falling into folly and make informed decisions that align with the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to think and act in accordance with His guidance.
