(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

رُبَّ صَديق يُؤتى(يُؤبى) مِنْ جَهْلِهِ لامِنْ نيَّتِهِ۔

This Hadith highlights the unfortunate reality that many a friend is ridiculed and rejected not because of their intentions, but due to their lack of knowledge or ignorance.

Let us delve deeper into the important words of this Hadith. The word (sadeeq) "صَديق" refers to a friend or companion. It signifies a close relationship based on trust, loyalty, and mutual understanding. The word (yu'ta) "يُؤتى" or (yu'ba) "يُؤبى" means to be harmed, scorned, or rejected. (jahlihi) "جَهْلِهِ" refers to ignorance or lack of knowledge, while (niyyatihi) "نيَّتِهِ" refers to one's intention or motive.

To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who are ignorant.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse cautions against mocking or scorning others based on their lack of knowledge. It reminds us that someone's worth should not be judged solely on their level of understanding, as they may possess other qualities that make them better in the sight of Allah.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that it teaches us to be compassionate and understanding towards those who may lack knowledge. It urges us not to dismiss or reject individuals based on their ignorance, but rather to guide and educate them. This Hadith emphasizes the importance of empathy and patience in dealing with others, especially when it comes to matters of faith and understanding.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and he exemplified these qualities throughout his life. He was known for his deep understanding of the Quran and his ability to provide profound explanations of its teachings. Therefore, his words carry great weight and serve as a reminder for us to follow his example in treating others with kindness and respect.

The consequences of disregarding this Hadith are detrimental to the unity and harmony of the Muslim community. When we belittle or mock someone due to their lack of knowledge, we create divisions and hinder their growth. Instead, if we approach them with kindness and patience, we can help them overcome their ignorance and strengthen their faith.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of knowledge and understanding in our relationships with others. It teaches us to be compassionate and patient towards those who may lack knowledge, rather than ridiculing or rejecting them. By following the teachings of the Quran and the example of Imam Ali, we can foster unity and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among Muslims. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to embody these teachings in our lives.
