Hadith #4662

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

نَكيرُ الجَوابِ مِنْ نَكيرِ الخِطابِ۔

This can be translated as,

A discourteous reply stems from a discourteous address.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (nakir) "نَكيرُ" refers to something that is rude, impolite, or discourteous. It signifies a behavior or response that lacks respect and consideration for others. Similarly, (al-jawab) "الجَوابِ" means a reply or response, while (al-khitab) "الخِطابِ" refers to the address or speech that precedes the reply.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good manners and respectful communication in several verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah says,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse emphasizes the prohibition of insulting and ridiculing others. It reminds us that every individual has inherent worth and dignity, and we should not belittle or demean anyone. It also warns against using offensive nicknames or derogatory language towards others. This serves as a reminder to Muslims that our speech should always be characterized by kindness, respect, and empathy.
