— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hell Fire)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us to be cautious of a fire that possesses three distinct characteristics. Firstly, its heat is intense, indicating the severity of its punishment. Secondly, its pit is deep, emphasizing the everlasting nature of its torment. And thirdly, its ornaments are made of iron, symbolizing the harsh and unyielding nature of its punishment.

To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Hellfire in various verses, shedding light on its terrifying aspects and the consequences of its inhabitants.

One such verse is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:24), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

This verse highlights the intensity of the fire, as it is fueled by both human beings and stones. The punishment of the Hellfire is so severe that it is beyond our comprehension. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and to strive to avoid actions that may lead to such a dreadful fate.

Another verse that complements the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Muddathir (74:27-29), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But he who is given his record in his left hand will say, 'Oh, I wish I had not been given my record and had not known what is my account. I wish my death had been the decisive one. My wealth has not availed me. Gone from me is my authority.'

These verses depict the regret and despair of those who are destined for the Hellfire. The deep pit mentioned in the Hadith signifies the eternal nature of the punishment, where the inhabitants will long for death as a means of escape. Their worldly possessions and authority will be of no benefit to them in the hereafter.

The third aspect of the Hadith, the ornaments made of iron, signifies the unyielding and unrelenting nature of the punishment in Hellfire. In Surah Al-Hajj (22:19-22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the garments of the inhabitants of Hellfire, saying,

For them are garments of fire, mended with fire; scalding water will be poured upon their heads, melting that which is in their bellies and [their] skins.

These verses illustrate the torment and suffering that awaits those who are destined for the Hellfire. The garments made of fire and the scalding water symbolize the unyielding and agonizing nature of the punishment. The use of iron in the Hadith further emphasizes the severity and harshness of the punishment that awaits the wrongdoers.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of leading a righteous life and avoiding actions that may lead to the Hellfire. It serves as a warning to Muslims to be mindful of their deeds and to strive for the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to attain salvation in the hereafter.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the severe punishment that awaits in the Hellfire. It highlights the intensity of its heat, the depth of its pit, and the unyielding nature of its punishment. By reflecting on the Quranic verses that complement this Hadith, we gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of our actions and the importance of striving for righteousness in order to attain salvation. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the Hellfire and guide us on the path of righteousness.
