— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كُنْ مُنَجِّزاً لِلْوَعْدِ مُوفِياً بِالنَّذْرِ

which translates to

Be a keeper of promises and a fulfiller of vows.

This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our commitments and honoring our promises.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (munajjizan) "مُنَجِّزاً" refers to someone who fulfills or completes their obligations. It signifies the act of carrying out promises and commitments in a timely and sincere manner. The word (mufiyan) "مُوفِياً" means to fulfill or discharge a vow or promise. It implies being true to one's word and ensuring that what has been promised is delivered.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of fulfilling promises and vows. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:34),

And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

This verse highlights the accountability we will face regarding our commitments in the Hereafter. It reminds us that fulfilling our promises is not only a moral obligation but also a matter of divine accountability.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling all types of agreements and contracts, including promises and vows. It serves as a reminder to Muslims to be people of integrity and honor their commitments.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges Muslims to be steadfast in fulfilling their promises and vows. It encourages us to be reliable and trustworthy individuals who are known for their integrity and honesty. By being true to our word, we not only fulfill our obligations towards others but also strengthen the bonds of trust and harmony within society.

When we fulfill our promises and vows, we demonstrate our commitment to upholding justice and fairness. We become individuals who are known for their reliability and dependability. Our actions reflect the teachings of Islam and the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Moreover, fulfilling promises and vows has far-reaching consequences. It fosters a sense of trust and reliability in our relationships, whether they are personal, professional, or societal. When we consistently fulfill our commitments, we inspire others to do the same, creating an environment of mutual respect and accountability.

Conversely, failing to fulfill promises and vows can have detrimental effects. It leads to broken trust, disappointment, and a loss of credibility. It can strain relationships and weaken the fabric of society. Therefore, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their words and to honor their commitments.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of being keepers of promises and fulfillers of vows. It calls upon Muslims to be individuals of integrity, who honor their commitments and fulfill their obligations. By doing so, we uphold the teachings of Islam and contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and sincerity to be true to our word and fulfill our promises.
