Verily time has its bow stretched [and ready], and its arrow does not miss, and its wound does not heal. It afflicts the healthy with sickness and the [one who is] safe with destruction.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Verily time has its bow stretched [and ready], and its arrow does not miss, and its wound does not heal. It afflicts the healthy with sickness and the [one who is] safe with destruction.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the relentless nature of time and its ability to bring about unforeseen challenges and hardships.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by analyzing the key words and phrases used. The word (الدَّهْرَ) "time" refers to the passing of moments and the progression of events. It symbolizes the transient nature of life and the inevitability of change. The phrase (مُوتِرٌ قَوْسَهُ)

has its bow stretched

signifies that time is always ready to strike, just like a bow that is fully drawn and prepared to release its arrow. This emphasizes the constant motion and progression of time, never pausing or relenting.

The Hadith further states, (لاتَخْطي سِهامُهُ)

and its arrow does not miss

This implies that the effects of time are inevitable and inescapable. Just as an arrow shot from a bow hits its target, the impact of time's passage affects every aspect of our lives. It serves as a reminder that no one can escape the consequences of time, regardless of their status or position.

Additionally, the Hadith mentions, (ولاتُؤْسى جِراحُهُ)

and its wound does not heal

This phrase highlights the lasting impact of time's trials and tribulations. The wounds inflicted by time do not easily fade away; they leave a lasting mark on individuals and societies. It serves as a reminder that the scars of time's challenges can shape and mold us, leaving a lasting impact on our character and resilience.

The Hadith continues, (يَرْمِي الصَّحيحَ بِالسَّقَمِ، والنّاجِيَ بِالعَطَبِ)

It afflicts the healthy with sickness and the [one who is] safe with destruction

This phrase highlights the indiscriminate nature of time's trials. It does not distinguish between the healthy and the sick, the prosperous and the destitute. Time's challenges can strike anyone, regardless of their circumstances. It serves as a reminder that no one is immune to the tests and trials of life.

To further understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing time wisely and engaging in righteous actions. It reminds us that time is a valuable resource that should not be wasted.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse highlights the trials and tests that individuals may face in their lives. It serves as a reminder that time's challenges are a means of testing our faith and patience.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we can gain a deeper understanding of the transient nature of time and the trials it brings. It reminds us to be prepared for the challenges that life presents and to utilize our time wisely in pursuit of righteousness. It teaches us the importance of patience and perseverance in the face of adversity, knowing that time's wounds may be deep, but they can also serve as catalysts for growth and spiritual development.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate the challenges of time and the strength to endure its trials. May we utilize our time in this world to seek His pleasure and strive for righteousness. And may we find solace and guidance in the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the noble Quran.
