(Ghurar al-Hikam: Speech And Speaking)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رُبَّ حَرْف جَلَبَ حَتْفاً۔

This can be translated as,

Many a syllable has brought death.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the power and impact of our words. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (harf) "حَرْف" in this Hadith refers to a syllable or a letter. It symbolizes the smallest unit of speech, emphasizing the significance of even the tiniest word we utter. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that our words have the potential to bring about death, not only in the physical sense but also in a metaphorical sense. This means that our words can cause harm, destruction, and ruin to ourselves and others.

The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the importance of guarding our tongues and speaking with wisdom and kindness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse emphasizes the need to choose our words carefully and speak in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:263), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allah is Free of need and Forbearing.

This verse teaches us that our words have the power to bring about positive change and reconciliation. By speaking with kindness and forgiveness, we can build bridges and mend relationships.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that our words have consequences. Just as a single syllable can bring about death, our words can lead to the destruction of relationships, the spread of rumors and falsehoods, and the infliction of emotional pain. We must be cautious and mindful of the impact our words can have on others.

Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding before speaking. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his profound knowledge and wisdom. He understood the weight of words and the responsibility that comes with speaking. As Muslims, we should strive to follow his example and seek knowledge before expressing our opinions or passing judgments.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

Many a syllable has brought death,

reminds us of the power and impact of our words. It urges us to choose our words wisely, speak with kindness and wisdom, and seek knowledge before expressing ourselves. By doing so, we can avoid causing harm and instead contribute to a positive and harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in using our words for good and protect us from the harm that can come from careless speech.
