Hadith #9414

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

راكِبُ اللَّجاجِ مُتَعَرِّضٌ لِلْبَلاءِ۔

This can be translated as

The rider of stubbornness is exposed to affliction.

Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (rakib) "راكِبُ" refers to a rider, symbolizing someone who is actively engaged in a journey or pursuit. (al-lajaj) "اللَّجاجِ" means stubbornness or obstinacy, indicating a refusal to yield or change one's position. And (muta'arid) "مُتَعَرِّضٌ" means to be exposed or subjected to something, in this case, affliction or hardship. Lastly, (lil-bala) "لِلْبَلاءِ" refers to trials, tribulations, or calamities.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse highlights that trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. Every individual will face difficulties, whether it be in the form of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, or even loss of loved ones.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes that those who persist in stubbornness and refuse to adapt or change their ways are more likely to be exposed to affliction. The Quran further emphasizes the importance of humility and adaptability in Surah Al-Hadid, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 21:25)

And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, 'There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.'

This verse reminds us of the fundamental principle of monotheism and the need to submit to the will of Allah. It highlights the importance of being open to guidance and willing to change our ways to align with the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate humility, flexibility, and adaptability in their lives.
