In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of controlling one's desires and passions before they become overpowering. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, advises us to overcome our lusts and desires while they are still weak, before they gain strength and control over us.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and phrases used by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The word (shahwah) "شَّهْوَةَ" refers to desires or lusts, while (quwwatidharaawatih) "قُوَّةِ ضَراوَتِها" means the strength or ferocity of these desires. The word (malakatka) "مَلَكَتْكَ" can be translated as "possess you" or "dominate you," and (istiqadatka) "اِستقادَتكَ" means "use you" or "exploit you."

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly warns us about the dangers of succumbing to our desires and the importance of self-control. In Surah Yusuf (12:53), we find the story of Prophet Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was faced with the temptation of Zulaykha. Despite her advances, Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) remained steadfast and said,

My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant.

Another verse that supports the message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against following one's desires, saying,

But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?

On the other hand, by following Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance, we can attain self-discipline and strengthen our relationship with Allah. When we resist our desires and seek His guidance, we demonstrate our commitment to righteousness and our willingness to submit to His will. This self-control allows us to make decisions based on wisdom and piety, leading to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
