راكِبُ الطّاعَةِ مَقيلُهُ الجَنَّةُ۔
Whoever embarks on [the ship of] obedience [to Allah], his port of call is Paradise.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
راكِبُ الطّاعَةِ مَقيلُهُ الجَنَّةُ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever embarks on [the ship of] obedience [to Allah], his port of call is Paradise.
Let us now delve into the deeper meanings of this profound Hadith in light of the Quran. Firstly, it is important to understand the key words used in this Hadith. The word (rakib) "راكِبُ" means "to embark" or "to ride." It signifies the action of actively engaging in obedience to Allah. The word (ta'ah) "طاعة" means "obedience," which encompasses following the commandments of Allah and His Messenger. And finally, (maqiluhu) "مقيلُهُ" refers to the destination or port of call, which in this context is Paradise or Jannah.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of obedience to Allah and the rewards that await those who embark on this journey. Allah says in Surah Al-Imran (3:31),
Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'
This verse highlights the importance of following the path of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) as a means of attaining Allah's love and forgiveness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:112), Allah states,
Yes, but whoever submits his face in Islam to Allah while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
This verse emphasizes the connection between submission to Allah and the performance of righteous deeds, which are essential components of obedience.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. By comparing obedience to a ship, Imam Ali highlights the transformative nature of this journey. Just as a ship carries its passengers from one destination to another, obedience to Allah carries the believer from the realm of worldly desires and distractions to the eternal abode of Paradise.
Embarking on the ship of obedience requires a conscious effort to adhere to the commandments of Allah and to follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). This entails fulfilling the obligations of Islam, such as performing the five daily prayers, giving charity, fasting in Ramadan, and undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca. It also involves abstaining from forbidden actions and striving to embody the moral values and virtues prescribed by Islam.
The consequences of embarking on this journey are profound. Paradise, as mentioned in the Hadith, is the ultimate destination for those who sincerely and wholeheartedly submit to the will of Allah. It is a place of eternal bliss, where believers will be rewarded for their obedience and righteous deeds. The Quran describes Paradise as a place of unimaginable beauty, with rivers of milk, honey, and wine, and gardens filled with fruits and shade.
Moreover, the journey of obedience is not without its challenges. Just as a ship may encounter storms and rough seas, believers may face trials and tribulations in their quest for obedience. However, it is through these challenges that one's faith is tested and strengthened. The Quran assures us in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
Therefore, with steadfastness and reliance on Allah, believers can navigate through the difficulties and continue their journey towards Paradise.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to actively engage in obedience to Allah. By embarking on this journey, believers can attain the ultimate reward of Paradise. It is through the fulfillment of Allah's commandments and the emulation of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that one can navigate the ship of obedience and reach the shores of eternal bliss. May Allah grant us the strength and guidance to embark on this journey and may He make Paradise our final destination.
