(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the qualities that a believer possesses. It states that a believer has four distinct characteristics: a perfect intellect, a pleasing leniency, an inclination towards good deeds, and an aversion towards bad deeds.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (aql) "عقل" refers to intellect or reason. It is the faculty of understanding and discernment that enables a person to make rational decisions. The word (fiyyun) "فِىٌّ" means leniency or forbearance. It denotes the quality of being patient and tolerant in dealing with others. The word (raghbah) "رَغْبَةٌ" signifies an inclination or desire towards something. In this context, it refers to the inclination towards performing good deeds. Lastly, the word (firar) "فِرارٌ" means aversion or avoidance. It implies a strong dislike or repulsion towards engaging in bad deeds.

To understand the significance of these qualities, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse emphasizes the importance of intellect (عقل) in attaining Taqwa, which is the consciousness and fear of Allah. A believer's intellect enables them to comprehend the consequences of their actions and make choices that are pleasing to Allah.

The Quran also emphasizes the virtue of leniency and forbearance. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:199), Allah says,

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse encourages believers to adopt a lenient and patient approach in dealing with others, especially those who are ignorant or unaware. The pleasing leniency (فِىٌّ) mentioned in the Hadith reflects the believer's ability to show kindness and understanding towards others, even in challenging situations.

Furthermore, the inclination towards good deeds (رَغْبَةٌ فِي الحَسَناتِ) mentioned in the Hadith aligns with the Quranic teachings. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:148),

So race to [all that is] good.

This verse encourages believers to compete in performing good deeds and striving for righteousness. The inclination towards good deeds is a manifestation of a believer's strong faith and their desire to please Allah.

On the other hand, the aversion towards bad deeds (فِرارٌ مِنَ السَّيِّئاتِ) mentioned in the Hadith is in line with the Quranic teachings as well. Allah says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:33),

Say, 'My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.'

This verse highlights the importance of avoiding sinful actions and behaviors. A believer's aversion towards bad deeds reflects their commitment to staying away from anything that displeases Allah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the qualities that a believer should possess. These qualities include a perfect intellect, a pleasing leniency, an inclination towards good deeds, and an aversion towards bad deeds. These qualities are in accordance with the teachings of the Quran, which guide us towards righteousness and piety. As Muslims, we should strive to cultivate these qualities within ourselves and seek to embody the characteristics of a true believer. May Allah grant us the ability to understand and implement these teachings in our lives.
